- How far the wrong chemistry went. Zero is a properly developed film, one is a full cross-process

- Which way the shadows go — negative into blue, and the highlights turn warm in answer. The two halves always part company

- How hard the curve is bent: highlights blow out, shadows choke

- Lifts the black off the floor. Cross-processed shadows almost never reach zero — the film gives back a haze
