- Where the light comes from. The only knob that truly changes the look: foil has no colour of its own, it reflects

- How sharply the reflection answers the slope of the embossing. Higher makes harder highlights, down to almost two colours

- Where the foil sticks. It goes only where the hot die pressed, and the die follows the dark places — lighter than this stays bare paper
